Watch Your Step (BBC)

A standard in the Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich repertoire from The Bostons days. The song was recorded on 28 February 1967 for a “Saturday Club” appearance, broadcast on 11 March 1967 and later featured on the BBC Transcription Disc #124 in April.

But the group can also be seen performing it live on German TV, for the “Beat! Beat! Beat!” show produced jointly by the American Forces and the German HR3 channel.

This particular episode, n°43, was pre-recorded in Offenbach on 18 May 1967. That was the famous time where Beaky and Dave Dee got to jam with the other show guests, Jimi Hendrix and Noel Redding (and Sandie Shaw) in the K52 Club.

The show was broadcast on 29 May, featuring their rendition of Bobby Parker’s hit, played, as they usually did, as a medley of “Watch Your Step/Land Of 1000 Dances”, with Dozy handling the “Na Na Na Na Na” part of the song: the excerpt that was not in the original Chris Kenner version, but ad-libbed when Cannibal & The Headhunters turned it into a hit in 1965.

But yet a newer version has come to light !

Note that this rare film is all the more interesting since the Paris FESTIVAL ’67 CD only contained 4 songs: “Hold Tight”, “Hideaway”, “Frustration” and “Save Me”.
