De Di Do Be Mi Ti !
hanging squabbles together by Vicky Hibbert

The two pictures illustrating the report were taken in Paris in May 1966, while the group was being followed by a BBC crew for the “A Whole Scene Going” film – and by Ken Howard filming the group plus the BBC reporters.
Above: Mick, Tich, Beaky, Dozy and Dave behind the Opera Garnier (rue Auber).
Below: Dozy, Mick, Beaky, Dave and Tich on the Bir-Hakeim bridge, near the Eiffel Tower.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich were mentioned in 4 more pages of this Dutch magazine: in a promotion for a forthcoming show in Holland in January 1967, and for “Bent It” being No. 6 in the Muziek Expres Top 50, “Bend It” placed at No. 2 in a Phonogram chart advertisement, and for the “Bend It” lyrics printed among this month double page.

Hitsong lyrics printed this month are mentioned in ME’s Top 50 by a (132) following song title

Below: Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich – A Day at the Opera, Paris, May 1966 (probably on May 24th).

And here is the Opera Garnier in Paris, ca. 1960:

The Hotel in the foreground on the left handside is the Café de la Paix. Behind it, between the Hotel and the Opera is the Rue Auber. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich are standing on the left gate before a statue representing “Instrumental Music”.

Above: statue and lamp post. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich never released any album in France, but at least they had one album cover made in Paris…

NB: During the “Whole Scene Going” BBC film, the group is seen fooling around on the entrance of the Opera Garnier, Tich pretending to play his guitar like a violin, Beaky playing bass with the guitar case and Dave Dee directing this “orchestra”. At the end of the film, they play a mock-cricket game on the sidewalk until Beaky starts chasing pigeons before the Opera gates. The same scene is captured in colour at the very end of the Ken Howard home movie, Dave Dee directing Mick behind the BBC camera in the foreground.

NB: 24 May 1966 was Eric Cantona’s birthday, and that same evening Bob Dylan played his first concert at the Paris Olympia. Everyone from Johnny Hallyday to Françoise Hardy was there.
