DDDBM&T IN AMERICA Phase 3

Zabadak-AdvertPHASE THREE: Now A Giant Here! (July ’67 – Jan. ’68)

During the Flower-Power Summer ’67 the group’s “Okay” single and their “Greatest Hits” album made a small venture into the US charts.
Soon a new college tour of America was being prepared, but Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich then switched their American outlet from Fontana to Imperial, a subsidiary of Liberty Records.

In December, the group’s debut on this new label was launched in the United States. Tours were re-scheduled for the New Year, while “Zabadak” began to take off in North-America.

“Touch Me, Touch Me” did not come out in the U.S. probably due to its poor English sales. The flip side to “Okay”, the rocking “He’s A Raver”, was strangely omitted in favour of an old LP track.

(UK) NME n°1076: Dave Dee U.S. return, panto ?
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich are being negotiated for a return visit to America. The group is also lined up for a string of TV and concert dates on the Continent, and plans for it to star in a major pantomime are now being finalised. There is also a possibility of the group joining a British package tour this autumn.
An itinerary is currently being worked out for a college tour of America which would probably take place in November. The group is already set for two days of concerts in Norway from September 8, to be followed by other dates in Holland and Denmark.
PiccadillyPalace-DDDBMTDave Dee & Co. are likely to star in the panto “Babes In The Wood” at Southampton Gaumont this Christmas, but contracts have not been signed. They were also being sought for a British package tour which is being set up for October, but discussions broke down over the question of billing. They are now considering another tour offer.

Sorry to report it, but John Maus’ (of The Walker Brothers) pretty wife lost the baby she was expecting. We’re really sorry about that, John and Cathey! . . .
DAVE DEE of DAVE DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK AND TICH smokes 80 cigarettes a day. His brand is Benson and Hedges, and those are even longer than King-size! Dave attributes his heavy smoking to nerves and having nothing to do when traveling – except smoke! . . . John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful just bought a beautiful new ranch house in Vermont. It’s got loads of horses which he and his pretty wife Laurie are just mad about! Michael d’Abo of Manfred Mann appeals to fans who grabbed his gold pendant at a show to return it. It was a wedding present from his wife Maggie London!

DAVE DEE & COMPANY
“Bend It” (Fontana)
Carol Gold has related to Teen-Set readers tales of newcomers to British pop being shocked by the group name Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. Dave Dee explains the logical reasoning behind the mind-toggling title: “We were known as Dave Dee and the Bostons, but people told us that it was old fashioned. We finally decided to go along with our manager’s idea of using nicknames that fit our personalities. Except for the “Dee” along with Dave, each name has a meaning. (“Dozy,” because he never knows where he is or what’s going on; “Beaky,” because he has a funny nose; Mick, because they couldn’t think of anything mean enough for him; and “Tich,” because he is the smallest. A “tich” in England is a tot.)
During the group’s recent American tour, which took them to eleven cities in eight days, Dave and his friends discovered that America is “bigger than anything I’ve ever seen. People, cars, everything!”
TeenSet-Oct67-CoverIndividually and candidly, as described by their road manager Jay Vickers, the group members are:
Dave Dee: “very down to earth … enjoys being at home … enjoys work … can be rather obstinate at times … remembers things about people … doesn’t like to miss a meal …”
Dozy: “manages to close his mind much of the time to hard work … very, very nice character … lovable … when we landed in Honolulu he said he was disappointed because he thought we were going to Hawaii …”
Beaky: “a home lover … rather petulent at times … no particular vices … very good sense of humor … he and Dave establish quite a rapport between themselves when doing live shows …”
Mick: “very nice … wants everything to be exact …very meticulous … groovy drummer … loves to spend time at home …”
Tich: “by far the most trouble-some of the lot … the most colorful dresser of the group … tends to take an interest in countries he goes to…would make a good spy …”

(UK) Disc and Music Echo: Dave Dee & Co. Far-East Tour in 1968, UK Tour in the spring
Ken [Howard] also revealed that Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich would DEFINITELY tour Britain in a major package next spring. The group would probably co-top the bill on a trek lasting at least three weeks around March and April.
This would be the last part of a world trip also taking in Singapore, Hong Kong and America again.
Continued Ken: “Their O.K.A.Y. hit is in the chart in Japan and we’ve had offers for them there for a week touring at the beginning of January. Following this would be other Far East dates and a proposed tour of American colleges.”
“Zababak” – number three this week in the chart and topping 200,000 in sales – has been delayed for States release. The group is in the process of switching labels. The hit may now be out on Liberty.
Dave Dee are close to completing their next LP for January release. “It’s a lot more ambitious than anything they’ve done before. We’re using a full orchestra and big arrangements. The boys are also writing some good new material themselves.”

What happens when Dave Dee & Co. have some free time? Like anyone else, they do the things they enjoy most. 6′, 166 lb. Dave Dee says there’s nothing like his home town, Salisbury, England, and one of Mum’s home-cooked dinners to make him feel good! Dave’s birthdate is Dec. 17, 1943. Mick likes to spend his relaxing hours keeping the boys’ scrapbook of clippings up to date. The 6′, 168 lb. singer says he still can’t believe that he and his mates have really become famous. Also a Salisbury lad, he was bom on May 15, 1944.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich have been booked as main supporting attraction on the Bee Gees’ first concert tour which opens at London’s Royal Albert Hall on March 27. Full details of the itinerary were reported in last week’s NME. A further attraction still has to be announced for the tour, and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band is being sought to fill the vacancy.
It is probable that the group will pay a short promotional visit to America–where its “Zabadak!” is currently climbing the U.S. chart – in early March.
