Chronicles: The Year 1966

CHRONICLES: THE YEAR 1966

1966 was Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich year.
Practically unknown at Christmas 1965, they ended the year the biggest British record sellers, with 5 hit singles in a row, adding up to a total of 50 weeks in the Top 50. With “Bend It” deprived of the coveted Number One by that year’s biggest hit, a country & western standard sung by Jim Reeves, who had died two years before.
And they had started conquering Germany, where “Bend It” had been Number One all through November and December, and the very last week of the year saw “Save Me” entering the German Top 40, thus putting 3 singles (with “Hard To Love You”) by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich in the charts for the next two months.
The group that had been a surprise last-minute guest at the NME Poll Winners Concert in May (where they “stole the show” according to Kim Fowley), ended as the third “Best New Group” in the New Musical Express 1966 Poll, behind The Spencer Davis Group and The Troggs.
That was their best period, because it was their first as genuine Pop Stars, and they still had many European and overseas countries to win over. At home, they were riding on the crest of the wave, and there wasn’t yet any backlash from other jealous artists, or from the press people dictating new trends, and what was “in” or “out”…
They also released two albums between that summer and Christmas, and would not have another until 18 months later.
1966 marks the height of their Beat Era, from which they would progressively develop into the biggest Pop hit providers of the second part of the sixties, courtesy of Mrs. Howard & Blaikley.
